Remembering the Zip-Van

    Last week’s announcement regarding the U.S. Postal Service’s decision to replace its 163,000 white mail-delivery trucks evoked memories of another time.
    It was the summer of 1963. The U.S. Post Office had awarded Studebaker Corporation a $9 million contract to build 4,238 special postal delivery trucks. The announcement was greeted with joy from the fans of the struggling South Bend, Ind. auto maker.
    Following the success of the Lark in 1959 and 1960, Studebaker sales began to slide as Ford, GM, and Chrysler entered the compact auto market. The Post Office contract, along with the introduction of the fabulous Avanti and the redesigned GT Hawks, were cause for optimism.
