Donald “Jay” Sielschott, 72, Chandlerville, died on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at his home. He was born August 22, 1948, the son of Donald and Fae June (Fielden) Sielschott in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Jay served our grateful nation in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army immediately after graduating from Chandlerville High School. While serving, he earned the rank of Sergeant, was awarded the Bronze Star and earned the Marksman Metal. After being honorably discharged from the military, he completed the Cement Mason Apprentice Program in 1975. He worked as a cement mason for many years and retired from Truman L. Flatt and Sons in Springfield. He was a member of the American Legion Post 694 in Chandlerville. He loved feeding the birds, listening to music, spending time with friends, looking through pictures, watching John Wayne western and military movies, and just doing things for other people. He also loved to work in his yard and growing his tomatoes, flowers and peppers.
Jay is survived by his daughter, Amanda (husband Jeff) Harris of Virginia; and a sister, Cheri (husband Tom) Shumate, of Greenville, South Carolina.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 29, at the Lintner-Hurley Funeral Home, with Pastor Linwood Brown officiating. Burial was at Chandlerville Cemetery. The Cass County Honor Guard performed military rites.
