Trivia Too – Illinois, home of many stars

I have always been proud of Beardstown and even additionally proud of Illinois.  I was never a celebrity, but I’m surprised at the number of celebrities who were born or have lived in Illinois at one time.

For example, Dick and Jerry Van Dyke came out of Danville.  Betty White was born in Oak Park.  Others born in Illinois from a column recently published by Bill Flick are Raquel Welch, Robin Williams, Pat Sajak, Walt Disney, Ernest Hemingway, Rock Hudson, Keke Palmer, Quincy Jones, Eddie Vedder, Melissa McCarthy, Harrison Ford, Jim Gaffigan, and Cindy Crawford.

Never forget the lessons of our past

It’s been a few days since Monday, Sept. 11, the attack on the World Trade Center, the Twin Towers. I wonder.......

Have we learned anything?

On that date in 2001, life seemed to be normal as usual. People were going to work, children were going to school, some were struggling with finances, depression, medical news, and at the same time celebrating weddings, births, promotions and other everyday circumstances. It was just an ordinary Tuesday. Or so we thought.

Focus on Faith – How to be remembered

Have you ever thought about what you want on your Tombstone?  Now I am not talking about the old Tombstone pizza commercial that asked you what toppings you want on you pizza.  What I am talking about your grave marker.  If you could write what appeared on your Tombstone, what would you put on it?

Maybe you’d want your tombstone to reflect a relationship you’ve had – Loving Wife, Beloved Father, Wonderful Grandparent.  Or maybe you’d like your tombstone to speak of your accomplishments – Protector of Animals, Defender of Peace, Musical Genius.

Bits and pieces

Bits & Pieces – Pajamas and dealing with guilt

Should I or shouldn’t I? Or maybe it should be do I want to or not? Ordinary questions but sometimes they’re tough to answer. Now that I’ve got you all to wondering what I’m up to, I should do some explaining.

Trivi Too – Movies over a lifetime

Editor’s Note: The late Roy Roberts loved to write and wrote numerous columns that we will continue to print until we run out. Enjoy! I have enjoyed listening to the radio through the years, but once movies arrived, that became my true interest in entertainment because the first movies that I paid a dime for were all westerns with Buck Jones, Tom Mix, Ken Maynard, and many other cowboys.

First Southern Baptist Church, Beardstown There is much talk these days of the downturn of the American Culture. It seems our culture is about as anti-religion as it can be nowadays.

Everyone can do something

Hot weather seems to be over.....for a while. But even though it’s been hot, there are some things we need to give our attention.

Trivia Too – Cute little stories to make you smilie

Editor’s Note: The late Roy Roberts loved to write and wrote numerous columns that we will continue to print until we run out. Enjoy! Here are some cute stories that people have sent to me: There comes a time when a woman just has to trust her husband…for example…a wife comes home late at night and quietly opens the door to her bedroom.

Tourists using the WPA Illinois guidebook most likely drove past Schmitt Memorial Hospital.

Looking Back – Guiding tourists to Beardstown

As the calendar turned to 1939, the nation was still struggling to put the Great Depression behind it. A first of its kind experiment launched by the federal government hoped to and was meant to help push the economy in the right direction.
