DeGeal recognized by fire district

The Ashland Fire Protection District Board voted to recognize resigning firefighter Jeff DeGeal at last week’s meeting for his years of service to the district and its predecessor, the Ashland Volunteer Fire Department. DeGeal is a former chief of the department. While he has resigned, he will remain with the district on auxiliary status.

A truck fire on Thursday, May 23, was determined a total loss, according to Beardstown Acting Fire Chief Brandon Hager.

A truck fire on Thursday, May 23, was determined a total loss, according to Beardstown Acting Fire Chief Brandon Hager.

The fire department recived the call at 9:56 a.m. to Auto Zone/Subway in Beardstown. The truck, owned by Presto-X Exterminator had chemicals on it, but there was no damage or spills of chemicals. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately 35 minutes.

Virginia Masonic Lodge cook-out to benefit summer reading program

Area residents are invited to help the Log Cabin Kids Summer Program by attending the Virginia Masonic Lodge cook-out this Saturday, June 1.

The cook-out will feature fresh grilled bratwurst and jumbo hot dogs. It will be held at the Fast Stop located on the northwest corner of the Ill. Rtes. 125 and 78 junction. Food service will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. or when supplies are exhausted.

LLCC Open House to be held June 18

Prospective students interested in starting or restarting college or training for a new career are invited to visit Lincoln Land Community College for a campus open house 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18. The free event will be held at LLCC’s Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Rd., and at Outreach Centers in Jacksonville (32 N. Central Park Plaza), Litchfield (1 Lincoln Land Dr.) and Taylorville (800 S. Spresser).

Wade Long of Beardstown was listed on Olivet Nazarene University’s Spring Dean’s List.

To qualify for inclusion on the Dean’s List, a student must have been enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student and must have attained a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.00 grading scale.

Illinois 103 in Schuyler County to close June 3

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that Illinois 103 between U.S. 24 and U.S. 67 in Schuyler County will close Monday, June 3.

The closure is necessary to remove and resurface more than seven miles of the road. Additional work for this $12 million project includes slope stabilization and guardrail replacement. The stabilization is needed just east of Sand Ridge Road to prevent further deterioration of the slope and to maintain the safety for motorists. With the new driving surface and other improvements, this will help increase the life of the road. Work is expected to be complete by the end of August.

State Fair renovations, repairs underway

Construction crews and Illinois State Fair staff are working hard to finish up renovations to the grounds as the countdown to the 2024 fair continues.

The Illinois State Fair hosts a plethora of construction projects, including phase two renovations to the Illinois State Fair Coliseum and restoration to the Multi-Purpose Arena.
