The Beardstown C.O.N.N.E.C.T. will have its Brown Bag Lunch in the Art Zeeck Park, downtown Beardstown every Wednesday during June. 

Lunch may be purchased for a minimal fee and includes drink and dessert. 

Music scheduled for the remainder of June are Stuart Smith, June 19th; and the Beardstown Community Choir on June 26th.

Pets of the Week

Charly (right) and Frankie (left) are sisters who were born in 2019. They are both super sweet and laid back. They love to lay in the window and be together. These beautiful girls, along with all other animals at SCHS will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before adoption. You can meet Charly, Frankie and all pets at Schuyler County Humane Society, 17000 County Farm Road in Rushville. Visitor hours are Tuesdays from 4-7 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon, and Sundays from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. You can also make an appointment by calling (217) 322-2220. Virginia police chief reappointed

At the June 10th meeting of the Virginia City Council, Mayor Randy McClure brought before the council the discussion and appointment of Eric Shumate for Chief of Police. 

Council Member Tommy Knous asked Chief Shumate a question regarding whether or not his availability in hours would be changing. Mayor McClure interrupted Knous telling him this was not the time for that discussion. However, Council member Christa Stanbridge stated that the agenda did state this subject was up for both discussion and approval.

There were no injuries following a one vehicle crash at Browning. The crash occurred at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, June 11. According to Illinois State Police, a White Freightliner Truck-Tractor Semi-Trailer combination, was traveling south on Illinois 100 just north of Old US 67. The driver, Don Large, 62, Rushville, left the roll-off container boom in the upright position and the boom struck the underside of a BNSF railway bridge. The vehicle rolled over onto the driver’s side. Although Large was not injured, there was property damage. Large was cited for exceeding the maximum height for a vehicle The roadway was closed for approximately two hours during vehicle removal.

County board approve appointments

The Cass County Board met Monday June 10th in the Cass County courthouse for its monthly meeting in Virginia with three members absent, Aaron French, Bob Schultz and Cass Wessel. 

There were two appointments for the Mental Health 708 Board to be voted on, Joyce Brannan until June 2027 and Pat Blair until June 2027. The two were approved with Eric Snellgrove and Amanda Ruppel both voting no.

Rexroat Prairie Cabin

Friends of Rexroat Prairie Photography Contest

A photography contest will be hosted by the Friends of Rexroat Prairie at the prairie beginning on June 15 and ending on July15. Rexroat Prairie is located in Virginia at the corner of IL Rt. 78 and Virginia Road in Cass County.

The contest is free and open to people of all ages. Photos will be judged anonymously by a professional photographer.

Community Breakfast this Saturday at VFW

The VFW Auxiliary of Post #1239 is serving a Community Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. this Saturday, June 15 at the Post Home, 610 East 4th Street, Beardstown. 

The breakfast will be biscuits and gravy, egg bake, fruit, coffee, milk and orange juice.

The meal is donations only. 

The Auxiliary continues to support the many activities of VFW Post #1239 veterans.
