A neighbor returning home from work saw the fire first and went into action to notify the residents and call 911 in the early hours of Monday morning. The home belonged to Tom and Vicki Taylor, 1212 Adams Street in Beardstown and is a total loss. According to Acting Fire Chief Brandon Hager, the neighbor went to Taylors’ house and started banging on the door at 1:30 a.m. to awaken them. Smoke detectors on both levels of the home were going off and at the same time, the residents smelled smoke. Both got out safely. When Beardstown Fire Department arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the basement and first floor windows. Hager said the fire started in the basement but the cause at this time is unknown. There was heavy smoke damage throughout the home and heavy fire damage to the basement and portions of the first floor. Also responding were Beardstown Ambulance, Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Arenzville Fire Department, Rushville Fire Department and Ameren. Hager said they were on the scene until 4:30 a.m
