Illinois art contest invites students to let their imaginations run wild

Wonder, curiosity, and questions are a part of growing up … and they’re the heart of the annual student art contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Illinois State Board of Education.

Illinois students have until Jan. 5 to submit entries on the theme of “I wonder …” The contest asks children from kindergarten through high school to interpret the theme however they want in two-dimensional art, such as a drawing, painting or collage.

Chandlerville mayor removes fire department heads, resigns

An investigation into the burning of an abandoned building in Chandlerville has resulted in the removal of two fire department employees and the resignation of the mayor.

Former Chandlerville Mayor Tim Richard resigned his position at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 17 as the result of the Illinois Environment Protection Agency (IEPA) investigation regarding the burning without the proper permits. The burn was conducted on Wednesday, October 11.

No co-op for A-C scholastic bowl

There will be no co-op between A-C Central and PORTA for scholastic bowl. A-C and PORTA co-op in athletics, but the board voted down a motion to extend the co-op to scholastic bowl. The teacher in charge of scholastic bowl, Jennifer Guillou, said A-C could only field a junior varsity team and PORTA could only field a varsity team this year. She said she was worried A-C’s JV players would be unable to compete with other varsity teams and the students would lose interest. The board members voting against the motion were President Todd Jokisch and Trustees Deb Petefish, Jason Smith, and Dan Cuba.

St. John’s Breadline sets Souper Friday Fall 2023 Fundraiser

The Souper Friday fundraiser benefitting Catholic Charities St. John’s Breadline will be serving up fresh soups to go. These made-from-scratch soups will be available on Friday, November 3rd at the Catholic Pastoral Center circle driveway, 1615 W. Washington Street, Springfield, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., or until sold out.

Chicken noodle soup, steak and vegetable, and chili will be offered. The suggested donation is $5 for 32 oz. of soup. All proceeds will benefit the St. John’s Breadline.
