Be prepared for severe weather, emergencies

Severe weather events are part of a worsening national trend. The Red Cross has responded to nearly twice as many large disasters across the country as it did a decade ago. Furthermore, the climate crisis is taking a heavier toll on frontline communities, who are often left vulnerable.

BHS to present Art Show March 7 

Beardstown High School Art Department/Art Club along with Caraustar, Inc., Beardstown High School Cafeteria and Beardstown HS Home Economics Department will be presenting “An Inspiring Night in Homage to Great Artists,” from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 7th at the high school commons (cafeteria).

Tree sapling give-away

The Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau will be giving away Red Oak, Bur Oak, Swamp White Oak & Pecan saplings.  Anyone that calls in will be put on a list to receive five tree saplings.  Trees will be available for pickup in mid-April.

Full Time Female Police Officer in Virginia Police Department

Officer Koti Huffman, the new full time female police officer for Virginia Police Department. She moved to this area in 2018, is married and has one child. Before joining the department, she was the assistant manager/kitchen manager at the Virginia Casey’s. She enjoys racing and baking cakes. In fact, she had a cake business at one time and still enjoys baking when she can. 

Ashland, IL

Ashland board moves on utilities 

The Ashland village board moved to handle utilities issues at last week’s meeting of the village board. They passed motions to purchase a utility locator and mapping program and a pump for the sewer plant. The purchase of the locator/mapping program comes with a not-to-exceed cost of $8,500. The purchase will be paid with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.

Chandlerville police officer to retire

At the Chandlerville Village board meeting held Wednesday, February 14th, it was reported that Police Officer Randy Holiday was retiring due to health issues per his doctor. The board discussed that a notarized letter of resignation/retirement would have to be sent. In the meantime, the squad car would have to be towed to Lacey’s for repair with a list of what should be in it. Holiday would also have to bring back everything he ordered. The board would have to look into his contract and look into hiring a new police officer.

IDOT begins resurfacing Rte 78

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a 5-mile resurfacing and maintenance project on Illinois 78 in Morgan County, from the Cass County line south to Snake Creek, begins Monday, Feb. 19.
