Virginia students in action 

During the Virginia School Board meeting, it was noted that the National Honor Society is bringing back a blood drive to the Virginia High School through the Impact Life organization.There was a meeting on March 13th to learn more about the organization of the event and then on April 13th the event will be held. The community is invited to attend. Student council members also participated in being election judges this year. Their day began around 5:30 a.m. and ended around 8 p.m.

Reflections of three women

Women of the community will be gathering at the Virginia United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 13 to recognize and call on God’s love.  

Barbara Wooldridge, Jacksonville, will portray three Biblical women, each who had a unique relationship with God. On-site registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the program running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Village of Chapin plans Spring clean-up

The Village of Chapin is getting cleaned up. Spring clean up days were recently announced. Village residents are encouraged to begin collecting unwanted items now to be discarded May 17/18. The Village will furnish three dumpsters each day for Village residents only to discard their unwanted and not needed items at no cost. Contact Village hall for a list of items ineligible for discard, Yard waste will also be collected on Monday 20 beginning at 6am. Yard waste must be curbside and in bags to be collected. 

Cass County zoning officer retiring after 39 years of service

Zoning officer, Denzil Lorton, announced at the Cass County board meeting on March 11th, that he will be retiring. 

Lorton said with all the solar and wind business, the load is getting greater. He has assisted with many rezoning ordinance rewrites in his time with the county and wishes them and his replacement nothing but the best. He will make himself available to whomever the county hires and assist them in anyway he can. Mr. Lorton did recommend Dave Mayes for his replacement. The board thanked Lorton for his years of service.

Illinois State Police investigates fatal school bus crash

Schuyler County Monday, March 11, when a Rushville-Industry school bus and a semi-truck crashed on US Route 24 that erupted in flames. The crash occured at 11:30 a.m.

Schuyler County Coroner Terry Millslagle pronounced the school bus driver, three children on the bus and driver of the semi-truck dead at the scene. Victims were David Coufal, 72, Browning; Angela Spiker, 57, Rushville; Maria Miller, 5, Rushville; Andrew Miller, 3, Rushville; and Noah Driscoll, 3, Rushville.

All five were transported to Memorial Hospital in Springfield where post-examinations were conducted.

St. Luke Lenten Fish Dinner 2024

St. Luke Church in Virginia will be having a Lenten Fish Dinner on Friday, March 22, at St. Luke Hall.

The serving line will be open from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. for eat-ins or carry-outs.  Menu will include catfish, walleye, baked potato, baked beans, coleslaw, dessert, and drink.

Hot dogs, mac & cheese, and chips will also be available for the kids.  Tickets may be purchased at the door.
