Entries sought for FOP Catfish Tournament May 18 in Havana

Entries are now being sought for the first annual Catfish Tournament sponsored by Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Spoon River Valley Lodge 427 that will be held Saturday, May 18 starting at Riverfront Park, 112 N. Schrader Street in Havana.

Pet of the Week

These kittens were born at the Humane Society on Saturday, March 23. They are now four and a half weeks old. There are four boys and one girl. Two of the boys are already spoken for but the other three still need new homes! They can’t be taken home until May 19, when they are eight weeks old. These kittens will have to be brought back to get their vaccines and to be spayed/neutered when they are old enough. They are starting to play and are very sweet. These cute kittens, along with all other animals at SCHS will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before adoption. You can meet the kittens and all pets at Schuyler County Humane Society, 17000 County Farm Road in Rushville. Visitor hours are Tuesdays from 4-7 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon, and Sundays from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. You can also make an appointment by calling (217) 322-2220. Gifts from Maggie Memorial Ride

The 3rd Annual Gifts from Maggie Memorial Ride will be held May 4th starting at Chandlerville’s Daugherty’s Pub.

Purpose of the memorial ride is to raise money for the Christmas program and to assist local familes throughout the year. Any and all people and vehicles are welcomed. All entertainment will take place at Daugherty’s Pub in Chandlerville.

There is a small entry fee per person or couple.

Community Calendar

The Kirsta Anderson Benefit will be held from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th at the Round House Event Center in Beardstown. There is a small cover charge that includes a meal and kids’ activities.

Enjoy the silence, Cicadas are coming

If you haven’t heard the buzz, you will soon. Billions of periodical cicadas are coming, and University of Illinois Extension is sharing information to help track their moves before emergence.

“Historically speaking, 2024 is a big year for periodical cicadas in Illinois,” says Ken Johnson, Extension horticulture educator serving Calhoun, Cass, Greene, Morgan, and Scott counties.

Periodical cicada broods XIII and XIX will be emerging throughout much of the state at the same time. Although exact times and locations will be varied, there will be cicadas.

The Beardstown Chamber of Commerce recently held the ribbon cutting on the Beardstown Park District’s JBS Soccer Complex field recognizing the major improvements funded by JBS.

Although the Lady Tiger Soccer game did not turn out as it was hoped, the improvements at the Beardstown Park District soccer fields are certainly living up to expectations. 

On Tuesday, April 9, the Beardstown Park District hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly minted JBS Soccer Complex. The soccer fields underwent a major revitalization beginning in the summer of 2023 through a $446,000 donation at the end of 2020 by JBS as part of their Hometown Proud Initiative.

Water rate increase likely for Ashland

The Ashland Village Board discussed a major overhaul of the village’s water rate structure at last week’s meeting. As part of this, Mayor Kitty Mau stated her belief that water rates will have to go up.

“We’re going to have to raise water rates, probably considerably,” Mau said.
