Blessings in a Backpack project receiving support at A-C Central

A-C Central elementary school children have begun receiving support from a non-profit organization called Blessings in a Backpack.
Blessings in a Backpack is a program designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program and have little or no food on the weekends.
Kendra Swain, who heads up the Ashland chapter of Blessings in a Backpack, explains the process: “We start collecting donations in April, with the program starting alongside the school year in August,” she said. “Volunteers get together and pack meals, which are given to the kids of Friday so they have food over the weekend.”
The program has received much support during the 2014 school year, Swain said. “We are very thankful to all those who donated and volunteered,” she stated, adding that donations for the next school year are currently being accepted.
