BetteJane Cowen, 98, Beardstown, died Friday, December 3, 2021 at Cedarhurst of Quincy.

She was born June 7, 1923, the daughter of Tressler Earl and Cecile Ann Crook Cox. She married Horace Patrick Cowen on February 15, 1947 in Beardstown and he preceded her in death on August 5, 2006.

She is survived by three sons, Dan (Jody) Cowen of Beardstown, Tim (Jean) Cowen and Chris (Monica) Cowen, all of Quincy; seven grandchildren, Tait (Alicia Drake), Tadd (Mary), Trey (Heather), Kirk (Heather), Clint (Sarah Coats), Rory and Nora (Justin Garza) Cowen; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Joan Cowen and a sister, Mary Ellen Humphrey.

Mrs. Cowen was a 1941 graduate of Beardstown High School and employed by Montgomery Ward, then as a bookkeeper, for Schultz Baujan Mill and Vredenburgh Lumber, both in Beardstown and worked in the cafeteria for the Beardstown School District. She was a member of Beardstown First United Methodist Church where she was active in the Circle 6 Women’s Group and the church choir. Mrs. Cowen was also a member of D.A.R. and the Silhouettes Singing Group. BetteJane was a talented singer and skilled artist who also enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling, especially to the mountains.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Beardstown First United Methodist Church with burial at St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery. Family will meet friends from 10 a.m. until time of services. Memorials are suggested to Beardstown First United Methodist Church.
