Looking Back – Train robbers in Springfield

A southbound Gulf, Mobile & Ohio freight speeds by the Iles Junction tower, the site of the 1912 attempted train robbery. The tower has been removed and the rail line is now part of the Union Pacific system.

It had the ingredients found in a dime novel: an express train, determined robbers, a sheriff’s posse, dynamite and even nitroglycerin. And it all happened at Springfield on Christmas Eve of 1912.Back then, The Hummer was a Chicago & Alton Railroad express train that ran between the Windy City and Kansas City via Springfield. Among railroaders, The Hummer was known as a “heavy money train.”

Trivia Too – Growing up with pigs

Little Piglet

Since we had many hogs raised on our farm, it wasn’t unusual to hear Mother yell, “Get to work kids, the sows are out!” She knew they were loose because they would walk right up to our living room’s bay window and peer in.

Focus on Faith – Too many mangers, not enough beds

Focus on Faith

Do you remember the days leading up to the birth of your first child? There are always challenges and anxieties when children are born, but especially when it’s your first. I’m reminded of this while reading the Gospel of Luke. He paints a challenging picture of the days leading up to the Savior’s birth, including traveling 90 miles with a very pregnant woman on the back of a donkey. Looking back now, we can see the glory that was present in those moments. But I believe that living through it in person was a different story.

Tigers down Bluejays – Lose to Camp Point Panthers

The Tiger’s Rylan Alhorn goes high to win the tip against Camp Point Central.

In a Cass County rivalry game last Tuesday, it was the Beardstown Tigers going on the road to Ashland to defeat PORTA-AC Central 53 to 45, giving coach Eric Anderson his first career victory over the Bluejays.

On Thursday, the Tigers hosted Camp Point in a girl-boy double dip and lost to the highly regarded Panthers 52 to 39, the exact same score as Beardstown’s only other loss this year to West Central.  BHS is now 6-2 on the season.

Bluejays fall to Tigers and Vipers

Beardstown’s Rylan Alhorn and PORTA-AC’s Ethan Mahoney tip it off to start the battle between the Tigers and the Bluejays.

PORTA-AC Central’s boys varsity basketball team had a rough go of it last week, losing both games on the schedule.

On Tuesday, the Bluejays fell to Cass County rival Beardstown at home in a closely contested game, 53 to 45.  The very next day the Jays had to travel to Franklin and take on South County, falling 45 to 30 to the Vipers.

Trojan Boys crush Eagles

The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Trojans dropped a tough WIVC game at arch-rival Routt to open last week then came back to blast the Liberty Eagles on Friday at home.

At the Routt dome, the Rockets slowly pulled away from the Trojans to pick up a 43 to 32 victory.  Routt led 13 to 7 after a quarter and 23 to 13 at the half.  They made it 37 to 25 after three quarters then took the air out of the ball in the fourth, allowing the Trojans to cut into the lead by just a single digit in the low
