Bits & Pieces – A lost mind is not pretty

confused brain

Our minds are a fascinating organ, one that works amazingly and sometimes it can be pretty scary.

I am one of “those” people who usually have too much commotion going on at the same time in my brain. I think it’s called chaos. We still function, do some things fairly correctly, yet our brain is working on the next event, next move, next comment, planning a meal, pick up the kids, trying to remember appointments and listen to someone else tell us how their day is going.

Good Growing – Garden trends for the new year

The internet is a wild place full of an endless amount of information, ideas, opinions, advice, arguments, and more. Tangled in this web, it will come as no surprise that my favorite spaces are those that relate to plants. I’ve been known to have many, many pages open in my browser window that relate to a vast expanse of horticulture topics. As I read through articles to answer one question, inevitably, more questions develop, which demand research and so on and so forth.

Tiger Wrestling results: Gil headed to Sectionals

Beardstown’s Daisy Gil placed third in the inaugural Girls Wrestling Regional and will advance to Sectionals in Geneseo on February 9.

Beardstown’s Daisy Gil is headed to the IHSA Girls Wrestling Sectionals. She qualified by going 4-1 and by placing third at 120 pounds in the first ever girls wrestling Regional Tournament.  For the last two years, the IHSA hosted separate sectionals and a state tournament for girls, but numbers have grown so dramatically that they had to put in regionals across the state this year.

Tiger JV and Varsity take second place

The Beardstown Tiger Varsity Basketball team is pictured with their Second Place Trophy from the Triopia Tournament. The Junior Varsity Tigers also placed Second in the tournament.

Both the Beardstown Junior Varsity and Varsity boys’ basketball teams took Second Place at last week’s Triopia Tournament.  The JV team played some of its best ball of the year in going 3-0 in pool play.  They won a nailbiter over the host Trojans 41 to 40 to open the tourney.  A 48 to 34 win over South Fulton and a 61 to 52 win over Carrollton would follow before the young Tigers would get blasted 71 to 24 by a very talented Hardin Calhoun team in Saturday’s championship game.

Junior High Basketball action – B’town, Triopia & Virginia results

With the junior high boys’ basketball season well into postseason play, only a couple of local teams remain in the mix while a couple of squads bowed out last week.

The Beardstown eighth grade team finished off their season in the first round of the Pittsfield Regional with a 46 to 9 loss to top seeded Athens. The Warriors bolted to a 19 to 0 first quarter lead in the easy win.  It was 28 to 2 at the half and 31 to 9 after three quarters.  Brandon Figueroa had six points, Carter Ross scored two and Erick Mejia notched one in the season ending loss for the Tigers.

Lady Tigers tamed twice – Carrollton Tourney results

The Beardstown Lady Tigers lost their final two games of the Carrollton Tournament, falling short of a chance at fifth place in the tough fifteen team field.  After their opening round win over Payson-Seymour the Tigers faced off against number one seeded Father McGivney High School out of Glen Carbon. The Catholic Griffins had their hands...

Lady Jays soar to 24-1

Porta Bluejays

Two more wins at home last week have the PORTA-AC Central Lady Bluejays flying high with a 24-1 season record. A tough conference win over Stanford Olympia to start the week gives the Jays a 4-0 Sangamo Conference mark. PORTA-AC closed the week with another dominating win, this one over Bloomington Central Catholic.

Lady Trojans sustain two losses

Trojans

The letters S and F spelled bad news last week for the Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia girls basketball team as the Trojans lost to South Fulton and South Fork to fall to 11-12 on the year.

The week started with a disappointing 54 to 48 loss to a 5-19 South Fulton team at home.  The Rebels led all the way, but the second quarter was the difference in the game.  It was 15 to 13 in favor of South Fulton after one quarter which they expanded to a 37 to 23 lead at the half. The Lady Trojans cut the deficit to 48 to 37 after three quarters and fought hard in the fourth but fell just a little short. One high note for Triopia was nine players getting on the scoreboard. Mylee Tracy led the way with eleven.  Ava Petefish had nine, Gabby Myers had seven, Addison Rohn had six, Lucie Dion had five, Eve Crawford had four and Raye Greenstreet and Lilly Pate each had two.
