Beautification committee will oversee bandstand revitalization

Shown above is a photo from the St. Louis Post Dispatch that was printed on July 6, 1952. This photo was taken when the bandstand on the Cass County Courthouse lawn held weekly concerts during the summer. Above is a 45-piece of Virginia’s school band under the direction of Anton Cerveny, music supervisor of public schools. At Monday night’s Virginia City Council meeting, it was announced that fundraisers will be held to do much needed repairs to the 111-year old bandstand.

Members of the Virginia Beautification Committee attended the Monday night council meeting to report that their recent bingo fundraiser was very successful. They’ve planned for proceeds from their last two fundraisers to go toward doing much needed maintenance and repair on the 111-year-old courthouse lawn bandstand. They also have word that their project will be recipient of a popular annual benefit called “The Virginia Open” scheduled for April 20.

Last week was a tough week for my family as we went from a five cat household down to three in a matter of days. We lost both of our male cats three days apart from each other. Over the course of two years and seven days, February has become a very depressing month for me. 

Several voice concerns over inner-city buses in Cass County  

Several members of the community spoke out about the possibility of inner-city bussing occurring in Cass County at the Cass County Board meeting held Monday night, February 12th. 

They expressed concerns of not being able to financially support illegal immigrants in addition to not being able to provide housing. Other concerns voiced were about taking jobs from people who are here legally and increases in the drug problems. It was noted these are all legitimate concerns should this happen.

Race proceeds benefit local food pantries

The Cass County Food Pantry and Jacksonville Food Center recently received checks for $2,282.93 each, the proceeds from last fall’s Jacksonville Memorial Hospital 5K/10K Race.

“We’re proud to continue the JMH Race legacy of giving back to the community,” said Kevin Eckhoff, race director. “Both of these organizations are seeing increased demand, so it’s rewarding to be able to help them meet the needs of families in our area.”

I loved raising my kids, but like all parents, there are those moments when you wonder if you made the right decision. 

One of the things I enjoyed most is the funny things they say. Many years ago, Art Linkletter hosted a comedy show called, “Kids Say the Darndest Things” from 1959-1967. Yes, I remember that show very well.

Residents lose power after vehicle strikes utility pole

It was a cold night for about ten homes on the east side of Beardstown early Monday morning. 

Michal M. Kayinduka, 48, crashed into an Ameren utility pole in the 1000 block of East 4th Street at 12:17 a.m. He was driving a white 2018 Volkswagen SUV. The vehicle was towed from the scene and Kayinduka had no apparent injuries.

Man cited in hit & run in JBS parking lot

The man who struck six vehicles in the JBS parking lot two weeks ago has been identified and arrested.

Louime Saint Gilles, 32, Meredosia, was arrested for having no insurance, driving without a driver’s license and leaving the scene of an accident.
