Beardstown Police Department has issued a “scam alert” for Beardstown citizens. Police Chief Martin Coad explained that someone is calling area residents claiming he is Agent Baker and posing as a Beardstown Police Officer. He is soliciting cash or gift cards over the phone.“We do not have an Officer Baker working for our department. Beardstown Police Dept. will not solicit for money or gift cards
The A-C Central school board aired its complaints concerning the athletic co-op with PORTA, but still wants to stay in it and discussed pursuing a joint statement of support with PORTA school district. The discussion at last week’s board meeting followed a meeting with PORTA about the co-op attended by Trustees Debra Petefish and Curtis Cosner.
The Ashland Fire Protection District continued its consideration of body armor for the firefighters at last week’s meeting. Matt Krembs, representing Armor Express based in North Carolina, attended and brought along several items to demonstrate to the board. These included the vests, called “plate carriers” because the vests are not themselves armored but carry pouches into which the armor plates are inserted. The armor itself comes in two categories: a softer, more flexible option that allows the wearer more flexibility and hard plates which has more resistance to incoming bullets. He also brought helmets to the meeting. In his presentation, Krembs urged the board not to purchase armor with vibrant colors.
The Masonic Scholastic Bowl started out in 1983 as a small project in northern Illinois. Decades later it has grown to be one the largest of its kind. It has over 330 registered schools to compete from all over the state of Illinois. This high-level academic competition has united thousands of students across this state in their pursuit of intellectual excellence.
It was with much regret that the Virginia School Board accepted the resignation of Jr/Sr High Principal Jake Stewart at its meeting on Monday, February 26th.
Principal Stewart has been at Virginia CUSD #64 for two years. He will be going to PORTA to be principal for third through sixth grade. It was a tough decision but one he made to be closer to family. He will miss the students, staff and community members of Virginia. The board thanked Principal Stewart for all his hard work.
On February 14th we embarked upon the period known as Lent. During Lent Christians all across the globe sacrifice something to symbolize what Christ gave up in His desert testing.
Scriputre says in Luke chapter 4 that Jesus was “led by the Spirit” to go into the wilderness immediately after His baptism.
Luke’s gospel also says he was tempted by the devil for 40 days and he ate nothing during those days. At the end of those days, he was hungry and exhausted and now we find beginning in the 3rd verse of Luke chapter 4 the devil engages in a time of severe testing of Jesus.
At the Beardstown School Board meeting held Wednesday, February 21st, Superintendent Brent O’Daniell announced that the Illinois State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders along with Dr. Patterson and Director Clyde will tour Gard Elementary along with the Middle/High School and participate in some activities with the students and staff at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 26th. They will also meet with the administrators, board of education members and the migrant staff for a time of questions.
I was glad to see Democrats and Republicans working together at the Cass County Board safety committee meeting Monday night. Most board members were present due to a contentious ordinance on busing, which was passed on to the full board for consideration at the March 11 meeting.
Adrian DeLoche is completely wrong about the Cass County Board proposal. No one wants busloads of migrants dropped off here. The board is trying to stop this practice before it comes to Cass County. DeLoche starts off his arguments with complete misinformation and goes downhill from there.
Congratulations to our Virginia Sr and Jr High students of the month. The students are Lindy Parlier, Cristian Provo, and Donnie Eveland.
Lindy is a Junior who is involved in volleyball, softball, student council, NHS, and FFA. Her biggest accomplishment in school is making NHS as a sophomore. Her goals for this year include making high honor roll in all quarters. After High School she hopes to attend a four-year university and enter a pre-med program.
