Rough season for BHS Softball so far

Lady Tiger third baseman Cami Coats makes the tag on a Pittsfield Saukee.

A tough season got even rougher last week for the Beardstown softball team, as the Lady Tigers dropped three games to fall to 3-15 on the season. A road loss at Liberty was followed by home defeats at the hands of Pittsfield and Pleasant Hill.

The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia softball team saw their six-game winning streak snapped last week, dropping two tough contests to quality opponents. Bits & Pieces – Cows that predict the weather

Cows sitting in field

As I write this on Tuesday, the forecast for the predicted storms headed our way sound pretty serious. High winds, hail, thunderstorms, hail and possibly tornadoes are all in the watch. The storms are supposed to hit later this afternoon.

I love storms.  I always have, even as a child.

Bluejays notch three wins

The PORTA/A-C Baseball Team.

Three wins out of five games last week improved the PORTA-AC Central baseball team’s record to 10-8 on the season.  An 8 to 2 road win over Midwest Central on Monday kicked things off for the Jays. They led just 3 to 2 after five innings before pushing across five runs in the sixth to put the game on ice.  Jett Karrick gave up seven hits in seven innings and had three RBIs on offense. Levi Hoagland had a triple and an RBI, Barrett Morse had a double and an RBI and Brady Kinney and Drew Marr each had a single and an RBI. Kendall Davis added a double while Hunter Roberts and Kolin Johnson added singles.

Lady Tigers defeat Rebels

Shelby Goodrich digs hard for first base in Beardstown’s loss to Rushville/Industry.

The Beardstown Lady Tiger softball team sandwiched a good win between a couple of tough losses last week. They fell at home to Rushville-Industry 14 to 11 then knocked off the South Fulton Rebels 12 to 0 at their place before falling at home to Western 6 to 4.  Errors continued to plague the Lady Tigers in their losses as they had seven in each of the defeats and only one in their victory.

Ribbon cutting at JBS Soccer Complex

The Beardstown Chamber of Commerce recently held the ribbon cutting on the Beardstown Park District’s JBS Soccer Complex field recognizing the major improvements funded by JBS.

Although the Lady Tiger Soccer game did not turn out as it was hoped, the improvements at the Beardstown Park District soccer fields are certainly living up to expectations.

On Tuesday, April 9, the Beardstown Park District hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly minted JBS Soccer Complex. The soccer fields underwent a major revitalization beginning in the summer of 2023 through a $446,000 donation at the end of 2020 by JBS as part of their Hometown Proud Initiative.

Water rate increase likely for Ashland

The Ashland Village Board discussed a major overhaul of the village’s water rate structure at last week’s meeting. As part of this, Mayor Kitty Mau stated her belief that water rates will have to go up.

“We’re going to have to raise water rates, probably considerably,” Mau said.

Virginia JH Scholastic Bowl Team on a roll

The Redbirds Junior High Scholastic Bowl team coached by Kristi Edwards was highlighted at the April 15th Virginia school board meeting.

The team has won 16 out of 22 competitions and has two tournament wins, the latest against Rushville/Industry last Saturday, April 13th. The Redbirds will be hosting Regionals at Virginia at 4 p.m. on April 24th. They have also been invited to attend the Morgan County Conference which is an honor due to the fact only so many teams are invited. The team is made up of Jamison Horton and Levi Watson, fifth grade, Jack Brockhouse, Sophia Horton, Sawyer Edwards, Maddie Whitehead, Matthew Bell, Addie Hughes and Shelby Long all in seventh grade. Coach Kristi Edwards commends the team on how they work very well together and are willing to let everyone participate.

Busy day for Beardstown Police

Beardstown Police were kept busy Monday afternoon, April 15, following two crashes an hour apart. The first one occured at 12:04 at 901 Canal Street when a vehicle driven by Alexandre Belizaire, 1013 Canal, crashed into a garage. He was driving a 2020 Toyota. The residence and garage was occupied by Eduardo Herrera-Lopez and the property was owned by Adan Hernandez, 1412 Clay Street. According to reports, the vehicle had to be extricated from the garage. At 1:10 p.m., a semi-tractor trailer driven by Nelson Kaupp of Gridley, struck a power line that was caught between the cab and trailer. Kaupp remained in the vehicle until police arrived who advised that he stay in the vehicle until Ameren was contacted and could assess the situation. The power line was pulled out of a house at 600 W. 13th Street. Once Ameren arrived, they secured the line and removed it. Kaupp said he was trying to make a delivery on Jackson Street. He was advised the area was not a truck route in the city of Beardstown and told he needed to figure a different route to make deliveries in that area.
