Alice Lou Gramann, formerly Schnake, 95, died on Sunday, March 6, 2022 at Heritage Health in Beardstown.
Alice Lou was born on October 22, 1926 to Rachel and E.H. Virgin of rural Virginia. Alice Lou was born in Jacksonville.
She graduated from Virginia High School in 1944. She then attended the University of Illinois in Champaign and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching with a minor in Spanish in 1948. She was a member of Delta Kapa Gamma. She also earned a Masters in Library Science which helped with her second career. She taught in Plymouth, Beardstown, and at Triopia Jr. Sr. High School.
She married Pete Schnake in 1956 and they moved to Beardstown. They had two sons, John Schnake and Bill Schnake. She was widowed in 1996 and married Arthur Gramann of Beardstown in 2001. Alice Lou was on the Beardstown Library Board and was instrumental in the building and opening of the Houston Library located in Beardstown.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Pete Schnake of Beardstown in 1996 and her son, John Schnake of Arenzville in 2021.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur Gramann of Beardstown; son, Bill Schnake (wife, Christine) of Springfield; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Private family burial will be held and a remembrance ceremony will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in Alice Lou’s name to the Beardstown Houston Library, 13 Boulevard Road, Beardstown, IL 62618.
