Mary Sue Orne, 73, Quincy, and formerly of Ashland, died Sunday, February 20, 2022, at Sunset Senior Living Home in Quincy. She was born February 9, 1949, a daughter of Gerald Raymond and Sue Devlin Mahoney. She married Edward A. Orne July 25, 1970, in Ashland, and he survives.
She is also survived by two children, Eric (Tracy) Orne of Quincy, and Susan (Jeff) Wilkins of Liberty, MO; one grandson, Holden Wilkins; two brothers, Jerry (Connie) Mahoney and Jim (Patricia) Mahoney of Pleasant Plains; two sisters, Barbara (Bill) Mau of Carbondale, and Margaret (Rick) Hamann of Quincy; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Ann Masters of Conroe, TX, and Jane (John) Jones of Conroe, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special aunt, Peggy Devlin of Ashland, and many loving cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Helen Petefish Strubbe; and brother-in-law, Ken Masters.
Mary was a 1967 graduate of Ashland High School. She attended Gem City Business College in Quincy. She began her career as an executive secretary at Bellatti, Fay, & Bellatti Law office in Jacksonville. She then worked at Pleasant Plains High School as an administrative assistant until retirement in 2010.
Caring for her family was the most important thing in Mary’s life. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, and cousin. She was always willing to offer help to a family member. She spent many hours following her children’s sporting events, becoming known for providing cookies or an entire meal for a team. Mary took great pride in watching Eric coach the QND Lady Raiders basketball and softball teams. She enjoyed trips to Liberty, MO, with Ed to spend time with Susan, Jeff and Holden and watch Holden participate in various activities. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. Mary’s faith was strong through all of life’s ups and downs.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2022, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland, with burial at St. Augustine Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Following the service, friends and family are invited to celebrate Mary’s life during a luncheon at St. Augustine Hall.
In lieu of flowers, Mary would be pleased with donations being made to support the following organizations: Parkinson’s Foundation, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Sunset Senior Living (Methodist affiliated), or Quincy Notre Dame Girls Basketball and Softball programs.
