BHS loses season opener to Lewistown 40-6 By Don Chipman Sports-Editor/Star-Gazette ... If it's any consolation to the Beardstown Tigers, they probably faced the best team they will see all season in the Lewistown Indians, who returned 16 starters from a playoff team last year, blasting the hometown lads 40-6 in the season opener. Lewistown scored on their first drive of the season on a 7-play drive, culminated by a 19-yard pass completion from QB Sepich to a wide-open wide receiver Beckman in the left end zone. Two plays later, following a BHS fumble on their own 37 yard line, the Indians put together another 7-play drive, highlighted by a 30-yard pass play to the Tigers’ one-yard line. From there, Lewistown's Duncan scored to make it 14-0 at the 3:32 mark of the first period. The Tigers gave up the football again, on their second fumble of the game, on the third play in the next series, with Lewistown taking over at the locals 48. On the first play, the Indians connected on a 20-yard pass completion to the BHS 28. A questionable pass interference call put the ball on the nine from where Gravitt scored to make it 20-0 at 11:03 of the second frame. After an exchange of downs and a fumble recovery by Beardstown's Garcia; Lewistown took over on downs at the BHS 45. In two plays the Indians dented the Tigers goal line at the 6:12 mark when Duncan went 37 yards on his second TD of the contest. This made it 26-0. Lewistown would score twice more in the second period. One when Rolando Luna fighting for extra yardage, had the ball swiped, and Rilea went 40 yards to paydirt. The final score of the night for the visitors came with 2:19 left until halftime, when the Indians went 66 yards in four plays, highlighted by a 50-yard gallop by Howeter, who raced untouched enroute to the score. With the continuous mercy clock running in the second half, the hometown crew was able to avoided a whitewash when in the fourth quarter Brady Spears broke loose on a 41-yard breakaway all the way down to the Indians one-yard marker. From there Carlos Garcia blasted in at the 4:54 of the final fling for the touchdown to run the final verdict to 40-6. ![]() Lady Tigers drop opening VB match to Lady Cardinals of Pleasant Plains By Don Chipman Sports Editor/Star-Gazette ... BHS 25-18, 25-22. Records: Plains 1-0; BHS 0-1 Trojans trample North Greene in 57-0 beatdown By Don Chipman Sports Editor-Star/Gazette ... Trojans fans were wondering, did the loss of 11 seniors from their team that posted a 10-2 record of a year ago, and could well have gone deep in the IHSA Playoffs, be enough that the Big Blue might suffer a down year? Forget that Trojan fans. The 2010 edition of the Triopia- Meredosia Trojans laid the pads to the North Green Spartans in the WIVC season-opener with a 57-0 beatdown of the Spartans. “We played okay,” said Thompson. "We’ll find out where we are after we play Calhoun this week." It took all of 0:21 seconds into the game before senior running back Brad Dinsmore went the distance in a 72 touchdown gallop for a sudden 8-0 lead as he also ran in the two-point conversion. Before some of the Trojans fans had even settled in their seats the Big Blue scored five first-period touchdowns, leaving North Green in their wake for a blistering 37-0 lead after one period of play. Dinsmore would secure his second touchdown of the game on a 17- yard burst, while Derrek Schone, who led the team in rushing with 136- yards, netted two touchdown runs of 45 and 40 yards, all in the first quarter of action. The fifth touchdown came on a 35-yard pass from Jansen Joehl to John Love giving T/M a comfortable 37-0 lead after one quarter of action. The Trojans led 43-0 at the intermission with a second quarter score coming off a 6-yard run by Jared Sanders. The Trojans added to their 37-0 lead with a pair of TD’s in the final frame, one coming on a 21-yard scamper by sophomore Tanner Huddleston, and a 14-yard gallop by Cody Curry. T/M with its usual devastating run game racked up 400 yards rushing on 34 carries, led by Schone's 135 and Dinsmore's 125 yards on eight tries. The stingy Trojan defense held North Greene to 59 yards on 31 attempts, and no yards through the air. T/M finished with 35 yards via the air lanes for 435 yards total offense. Leading the Trojan defensive effort: Kody Jackson with five solo tackles and two assists, and one tackle for loss. Phillip Whited also had five solo tackles and two assists. ![]() Rushville Rotary Club to hold Golf Tournment The Rushville Rotary Club will host its annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 18th at the Scripps Park Golf Course in Rushville.
