Don Robert Large, October 10, 1936-August 14, 2014
Don Robert Large, 77, of rural Beardstown, died very peacefully at his residence and went to be with his Lord on Thursday, August 14.
He was born at home on October 10, 1936 in rural Beardstown, the son of Wilmer and Mayola Jaegers Large.
He is survived by his children: Leslie (David) Groth of Athens, Martha (Doug) Zimmerman of Avon, Don Robert Large II, Emily Walker and Julia (Tom) Goodrich, all of Beardstown; 13 grandchildren: Justin (Amanda) Warnke of Plainfield, Erin, (T.J.) Shue of Sherman, Christopher Zimmerman of Elmwood, Joseph Zimmerman of Savoy, William (Kelly) Zimmerman of Avon, David Large of Beardstown, Racheal Large of Springfield, Robbie Clark Large, Jeremy (Chelsea) Walker, Jason Walker, Callie Martin, Mason Goodrich and Shelby Goodrich, all of Beardstown; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Iva Stock of Beardstown and Mary Jane Canedy of Henrico, N.C. He was preceded in death by one sister, Eva Meyer; one brother, Lloyd Large; and a brother, Glen, in infancy.
He married Sharon Jo Hyde on December 8, 1957 in Beardstown. The union ceased in 2007.
Don was a graduate of Beardstown High School and member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown, where he served as a council member in his younger days. He loved the game of baseball, playing as often as the chance arose. At family gatherings Don was often out in the yard playing ball with his nieces and nephews. He coached Little League for several years. Don farmed as a boy and continued farming in the Beardstown area for many years until his retirement. He worked from sun up to sun down, passing on a strong work ethic to his family. He appreciated the time spent with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don also enjoyed watching baseball, fishing, and playing “old-fashion” board games, as he was a champion at Monopoly. Watching Lawrence Welk and Bonanza reruns were a favorite past time. Don was cared for in recent years by committed caregivers, Melanie Shores and Julie Avery.
Don’s deep faith carried him through many challenging times. In the later days, Don fully believed the scripture Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” His family was very blessed to have him share this legacy with them.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 23, at 10 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown, followed by a service at 11 a.m. at the church. The family will place a memorial marker at Black Oak Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Beardstown School Athletics or Black Oak Cemetery.
