The Old Lincoln Courthouse & Museum in Beardstown is where Abraham Lincoln defended “Duff” Armstrong in the famous “Almanac Trial.” It is the only courtroom where Lincoln practiced law that is still in use today. Also inside the courthouse, the Beardstown Historical Museum houses historically and culturally significant collections and artifacts relating to the Beardstown community and the central Illinois region. A-C Central Community Unit School District #262, home of the “Knights,” is comprised of students from the Ashland and Chandlerville communities. The elementary building is located in Chandlerville. The Beardstown Houston Memorial Library system is located at 13 Boulevard Road in Beardstown, Illinois. The Beardstown Houston Memorial Library provides free services to all residents living within the Beardstown city boundaries with services available to all others for a fee.The current collection includes 22,951 books, 712 audiobooks, 702 videos and DVDs, two daily newspaper subscriptions, 13 magazine subscriptions, 159 microfilm reels of local newspapers, and over 50 multi-media kits.
The library is also a member of Alliance Library System and the Resource Sharing Alliance. Through these memberships, our patrons have access to the materials in 198 libraries in the state of Illinois. I n 2007-2008, circulation of materials increased by 22 percent. In addition, 20,585 people visited the library throughout the year, an increase of 70 percent from the previous year. Thousands of people entered the library to utilize print and electronic reference resources, access the Internet through the Library’s cable connection, enjoy state-of-the-art Wi-fi service, participate in computer and Internet training, or attend one of the Library’s many events.
