Mike Wikens, site superintendent of the Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area, was the keynote speaker at the annual Beardstown Chamber of Commerce membership dinner held Thursday, March 13, at the Elks Club.
Panther Creek is a popular recreation area, one that is right in our own backyard. The site has over 800,000 visitors per year, numbers which have steadily grown, Wikens said, There were 695,544 visitors in 2011, 760,310 in 2012, and 801,645 in 2013.

Though America is a land of plenty, hunger is a fact of life faced by 33 million adults and nearly 16 million children including young and old alike in Cass County.
Scouting for Food is an annual service project initiative of the Cub and Boy Scouts meant to help combat the problem of hunger.

Staake Sentenced to 18 Years in Second Degree Murder Conviction PDF Print E-mail

Twenty-two-year-old Jared Staake of Beardstown, convicted in January of second degee murder, was sentenced 18 years to the Illinois Department of Corrections Thursday in Schuyler County Court. Staake was convicted Jan. 16 of stabbing Michael Box, 33, of Dyersburg, TN., on July 2, 2013, at the Schuyler County fairgrounds, leading to Box’s death from septic shock two days later.
Judge Alesia McMillen rendered the sentence after hearing state witnesses, remarks by the defendant and reviewing the pre-sentencing report. Although the defense had asked for no more than 10 years, Judge McMillen said that it had to be a serious sentence and did not think 10 years was appropriate.
