Snow brings Christmas spirit PDF Print E-mail

What a beautiful snowfall this past week! Really brings out the Christmas spirit in everyone. Last week, the Virginia High School Student Council sponsored a food drive for the Cass County Food Pantry. They spent three hours helping unload the truck and collecting over 600 food items and cash donations in the cold weather. Great spirit there!
After this weekend's snowfall, a young man was out using his grandpa's snow shovel with wheels clearing the neighbor's walk and told me that he had been given money for that work but he was really just doing a good deed. Later in the afternoon, he was shoveling my drive. I thanked him and offered him payment for his services and he declined stating that he was just doing a good deed because he is a Boy Scout. What a volunteer spirit he has at such a young age!
The majority of the debris inside the Dime Store has been removed and it is possible to see the alley behind from the front windows. It has not been perfect weather for working outside but thankfully, the contractor kept working away. Two and a half years ago, it was a snow such as this that caused the majority of the roof to collapse. Fortunately, this snow did not have a chance to do any serious unintended damage thanks to the donors of Virginia's Square One, Inc. Once the interior has been completely removed and the backfill packed down, interior construction can begin in the spring. Funding is needed to complete the rebuild and there are many ways to contribute. Buy a raffle ticket to win a fabulous 1984 Oldsmobile Omega to be given away February 22, sign up for Trivia Night on January 18 or send a tax deductible donation to Petefish, Skiles & Company Bank. With everyone's help, this former eyesore can become a useful building all made possible by true community spirit!
The Virginia School Holiday Concert is Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in the gym. The 5th through 12th grade band will be performing.
Christmas break will begin on December 23 with students returning to school on January 6.
May everyone have a safe and happy holiday!
