Volunteers from VFW Post 1239 Men's Auxiliary and local concrete contractors began construction on the new Veterans' Memorial located near the intersection of IL Rt. 125 and the Wall Street extension.
About a dozen workers showed up on November 2 to pour a concrete base for the monument. Twenty-one yards of concrete were poured and formed. Special dye was added to the mix to give the base a brownish hue and a chemical was sprayed on the surface to create an exposed aggregate appearance. Volunteers returned the following day to wash down the surface.
Plans are proceeding to order a battle cross as the centerpiece of the monument. Benches, flag poles and lights are also planned. Fundraising will begin soon with projects to include selling bricks that will have the veteran's name etched on them and embedded in the monument. Corporate sponsorships will be sought as well.
Post 1239 Men's Auxiliary wishes to acknowledge the contributions of Butch Cooper and Mike Sloan, concrete contractors, and Birdsley Electric.
