A wedding reception turned ugly Saturday night when an assailant stabbed the groom, sending the victim to Passavant Area Hospital In Jacksonville and the alleged assailant to jail.
According to Cass County Sheriff’s Captain Devron Ohrn, the incident occurred sometime around 7:30 p.m. at a rural Bluff Springs location. Contrary to numerous reports, the incident did not occur at Reichert’s Barn.
Ohrn identified the alleged assailant as Shane Ward, 40, of Griggsville. The victim is Steve Sappington, 51, also from Griggsville.
Sappington was stabbed in the neck, causing serious injuries. He remained hospitalized at press time.
Ward and Sappington allegedly had an argument that culminated in the stabbing. The exact nature of the argument was not reported.
Following the assault, Ward returned to Griggsville where he was taken into custody by the Pike County Sheriff’s Department.
Ohrn, who took Ward from Pike County to the Morgan County jail, said Ward has been charged with aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony. Aggravated battery can carry three to five years in prison as well as a fine of up to $10,000.
Ohrn said the investigation is ongoing. Additional charges could be filed at a later date.
Ward was released from jail on Monday after posting 10 percent of his $50,000 bond.
