When things go south, they really go south. Ask head coach Rich Thompson and his staff, they know all about it.
The Triopia Trojans fell to West Central in a 44-14 beatdown to keep the Cougars playoffs hopes alive. In the process, the Big Blue slipped to 2-6 for the season.
Triopia’s defense simply  had no answer for the hard running of Drew Barnett who rushed for 154 yards on 21 carries and scored one touchdown. West Central’s Austin Boehs also racked up 92 yards and a pair of TD’s in the runaway romp.
Seldom have you seen opponents finish with more rushing yardage than the Trojans put up. But this is not an ordinary  year, especially for the Blue and White.
West Central held a 321-235 edge in total yardage, with a huge 318 122 difference on the ground. A surprise to most people, the Trojans held a 113-3 advantage in the passing game.
It appeared that maybe Coach Thompson and his staff had gotten things straightened out when they took an early 8-0 lead in the first period on a one-yard blast by Kendall Clayton at 6:59. of the opening frame.             However, fame is fleeting as the Cougars would add a pair of lightning- like scores in the second quarter, beginning when Boehs scored on a 30-yard run to tie the contest  at 8-8.
Just 0:47 seconds later West Central’s Brandon Reid dented the goal line on a three-yard burst which gave Cougars the 14-8 halftime lead and they would never trail from then on.
The host Cougars added to their lead when QB Kobie Hoover crossed the goal line from one-yard out to make it 20-8 at 6:08.
The Trojans battled back to get within 20-14 when Clayton added his second touchdown on the night on a one-yard run at the 3:48 mark of the third frame.
West Central then took command of the contest early in the final frame when Hoover again scored on a one-yard run with the fourth period, just underway at 11:16 and salted away the win when Boehs intercepted a Nate Shanks pass and returned it 53-yards to paydirt. The hosts added the final score at 3:47 when Barnett banged in from three yards out.
