The BHS Tigers used the big play offense to score a 54-20 run-away from winless Bushnell-Prairie City last Friday on the Spartans’ home turf. The Tigers used the big play offense to move within one game of the IHSA playoffs. The Tigers held a 327-166 edge in total yardage with 85 of those rushing yards coming against the Tiger reserves.
Led by Alex Myles, who rushed for 170 yards on only four carries, the hard-running halfback found the end zone three times. Teammate Cole Huey also had a big night, rushing for three TD’s and picking up 83 yards on nine attempts. The O&B need a win over North Fulton on Senior Night here at Nick Carter Field Friday to clinch a berth in the IHSA playoffs.
It took the Tigers all of three plays to get on the scoreboard covering 73 yards, 55 of which came on a run by Myles to the Spartan two. Vermillion took it in from there. Following a tipped-pass interception by the Spartans, BHS forced a B-PC punt; and on the first play from scrimmage, Myles ripped off another 55-yard TD jaunt to make it 16-0 at the 3:07 mark.
The Tigers got the second period off to a flying start when Vermillion hooked up with Myles on a nice 30-yard TD connection at 11:42. Huey got the first of his three TD’s on a four-yard blast at 5:37. The scoring drive took eight plays to go 58 yards. Huey gained 55-of-the-58 yards in this scoring drive.
BP-C’s Troutman Rench stunned the hometowners when he snuck behind the secondary and raced 70 yards on a touchdown reception from QB Dalton Miller on a 15 yard pass and 55 yard run after the catch to make it a 29-6 contest with 3:50 left until intermission.
The O&B would add the third TD of the second frame when Huey picked up a Spartan fumble and rambled 35 yards to paydirt with only 0:45 ticks left until halftime to give the locals a 36-6 lead at the midway break.
Beardstown added three more scores in the third quarter to put the running clock in motion. The first score was set up when Jonathan Juarez intercepted a Miller pass at the Spartan 45. Myles ripped off a gallop of 29 yards to the Spartan 16. On the next play he raced untouched 16 yards to the end zone to run the verdict to 42-6. On the following series, on a fourth down and in punt formation, the Spartan center snapped the ball over the head of the punter with Chad McCombs recovering on the B-PC’s 45. Five plays later Huey went straight up the middle 20 yards to paydirt to make it 48-6. Alex Schultz then ended the Tiger scoring when he made a dazzling 50-yard punt return setting up his blockers along the way on the run to daylight. This made it 54-6 with 0:10 to go in the third period.
Coach Tyler Buhlig made wholesale substitutions in the Tiger lineup bringing on the reserves to finish the final frame. B-PC took advantage of the younger Tigers when the Spartan’s Hall raced 60 yards to paydirt on a nice ball fake that left him all alone down the far sidelines where he raced untouched to the goaline. The final touchdown of the game came when BHS fumbled the football with B-PC recovering at the hometowners 28. Spartan halfback Nick Norris raced 25 yards on the second play from scrimmage to run the final verdict to 54-20.
