In a season that is fast going downhill for the Triopia Trojans, another surprise was in the wings as the Mendon Unity Mustangs hung a 43-22 bashing on the Big Blue.
Triopia jumped out front in the first period to take a 16-0 lead and appeared to have things in hand, only to see everything go south as the Mustangs scored 37 un- answered points enroute to the 43-22 final verdict.
“We came out and looked sharp, built the 16-0 lead and just quit playing football,” stated a dejected Rich Thompson.
The Mustangs threw for 295 yards passing with QB Brady Loos tossing four TD passes of 23, 24, 14, and four yards to four different receivers. Triopia as usual, had the ground game going with 318 yards of rushing, led by Seth Maxwell’s 85 yards on 14 carries, and QB Tristan Wise racked up 85 yards on five carries.
The two teams combined for over 750 yards with the Trojans totaling 396, and Mendon coming up with 364. The Trojans’ defense held Mendon to 68 yards rushing with Blackman’s 28 yards on four attempts leading the winners.
Triopia got off to a fast start when Shay Hopkin returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown with 11:45 showing on the clock. The Big Blue struck again when Matt Parker ran in from four yards out at 4:09 to run the score to 16-0.
Things started to go downhill for the Trojans when Loos hit Cameron Brink on a 23-yard scoring toss with 2:51 left in the first period to bring the Mustangs within nine at 16-7.
Loos found Scott Beck for a 24-yard touchdown pass with just 0:35 ticks off the clock in the second period to make it 16-14. The hosts took the lead for good when Alex Blickman caught a 14-yard TD pass from Loos late in the second quarter just before intermission at 0:11 to put Mendon Unity on top at halftime 21-16.
Blickman became the thorn in the Trojans side when he returned a punt 75 yards to pay-dirt at 6:59 of the third period to make it 28-16. Mendon again put points on the board when Loos hooked up with Clayton Thompson at 3:09 on a four-yard pass reception and closed out the third period with a safety by Lane Davis with 0:39 left to run the score to 37-16.
The Big Blue finally broke the scoring dry spell when Nate Shanks hit Justin Gregory on a 25-yard scoring pass with 8:27 left. The PAT pass failed and the score moved to 37-22.
The game’s final score came with 1:59 left when Blickman scored his third TD of the contest on a 17-yard scamper to run the final verdict to 43-22.
