The Amigos Unidos Committee announces that the XVI Fiestas Patrias celebration will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14 and 15, at Art Zeeck Park in Beardstown.
The celebration is being extended this year to incorporate all the cultural influences located in Beardstown and the surrounding area to make this a multi-cultural and multi-dimensional event. This year everyone will have the opportunity to experience and participate in an extended celebration spanning two consecutive days of music, food and fun. This year the celebration will begin on Saturday, Sept. 14, with entertainment from 5-10 p.m. It will continue on Sunday. Sept. 15, from 11 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
The Amigos Unidos Committee has been sponsoring the Fiestas Patrias Celebrations over the past 16 years as part of an effort to bring meaningful cultural events that help incorporate all the many cultures residing in the Beardstown area into a multi-cultural event that brings everyone together. These events help us learn from each other and share experiences that help us grow as a community. We, the Amigos Unidos Committee, enthusiastically invite you to the XVI Fiestas Patrias celebration! Below is a description of the events that will take place.
Participating Artists: Band La Tremenda Del Bajio, who play a musical genre known as Banda Sinaloense, an allusion to Sinaloa, Mexico, the state which is considered the place of origin for this music genre. Previously, the band was known as Guadalupana Band. This group consists of approximately 30 artists, making it the largest attraction playing for everyone’s enjoyment.
-Mexican Dance Ensemble is a dance company from Chicago specializing in Mexican Folk Dance. This dance ensemble has a wide following in the Chicago area.
-Tristan Vega, the Cuban-born singer and his band will perform popular Caribbean genres of music such as Salsa, Meringue and Bachata. He also has a passion for Mexican music.
-Mariachi Alteño is well known in the Beardstown area, participating in the celebration for the past six years. The group plays Mariachi music, a Mexican genre recognized world-wide.
-Group Kazador is a local group. They have spent the last few years in Mexico, but have returned for our celebration. They specialize in grupero music and Cumbia style from northern Mexico.
-Tamborazo El Conquistador de Michoacán performs music originating in the central states of Mexico. The group incorporates two types of instruments, wind and percussion, in a military style representative of the late 19th century. This upbeat style is great for dancing.
2-Election of the Queen of the Fiestas Patrias: Ms. Cecilia Reza is coordinating this year’s election of the Fiestas Patrias Queen. This event is the centerpiece of the celebration. The election process began on Saturday, Aug. 3, with the presentation of the candidates, and culminates on Saturday, Sept. 14, with the 8 p.m. coronation ceremony at Art Zeeck Park.
The candidates for this year’s queen contest are: Angelli Martinez, Shaneika Ruiz, and Tania Lucha.
Individuals can purchase votes for $2, and will be included in a raffle for an iPad.
Outgoing Queen and Princesses are: Queen: Edith Chaidez, 1st Princess: Alejandra Izquierdo, 2nd Princess: Brenda Maldanado, 3rd Princess: Jasmine Vizcarra.
Parade Floats: Parade floats are coordinated this year by Claudia Zabala, a teacher in Beardstown. The Mariachi Alteño and El Tamboarzon el Conquistador de Michoacán will play throughout the parade. The parade will begin at the corner of Lafayette Street and 6th Street in front of the Catholic Church. Participants in the parade need to line up between 12 and 1 p.m. The parade begins at 1 p.m. and ends at 1:30 at the town square.
Prizes: 1st-$300.00, 2nd-$200.00, & 3rd-$100.00. To participate in the parade contact Claudia Zabala at (217) 473-2044 and receive your membership number for line-up.
Food Stands, Carnival Games, and Mechanical Rides: This will be coordinated by Mr. Jesús Gómez. He can be reached at (217)377-2366. There will be over twenty international food stands participating along with games and mechanical rides for children and adults to enjoy.
