Alex Myles had a night that most running backs dream of as he scored five touchdowns and rushed for 228 yards on 13-of-19 yards in Beardstown’s 45-12 romp past South Fulton last Friday night at Nick Carter Field.
Tiger QB Gus Vermillion didn’t have a bad night himself as the lanky junior threw for 201 yards and one touchdown, with another TD pass called back due to a penalty.
The Tiger offense rolled up 567 yards that included a 37-yard field goal by D’Ante McWilliams. He narrowly missed a 39-yarder that was just right of the crossbar.
The O&B scored on their first possession when Myles broke loose and out-ran the Rebel secondary on a 50-yard jaunt. McWilliams’ PAT was good and the Tigers led 7-0 at 9:02 of the first period.
On the next possession, after holding South Fulton to one first down, the hometowners struck quickly when Vermillion hooked up with Alex Schultz on a 29-yard TD strike that was nullified by a holding penalty. Three plays later Myles, after catching a pass, made a spinning move to elude two Rebel defenders and raced into the end zone from 27 yards out. The PAT at 4:24 of the opening frame put the locals on top 14-0.
Beardstown found the South Fulton goal line at 7:21 of the second period when Myles scored his third TD of the game following a 30-yard gallop, when he made a nice cut against the grain and raced in untouched. A 19-yard pass from Vermillion to McWilliams helped set up the score.
On the next series, Jon Kramer intercepted a Seth Keesler pass at the BHS ?. A 40-yard completion to Alex Schultz set up the missed 39-yard field attempt by McWilliams after the drive stalled at the Rebel 22.
The Tigers were knocking at the door when time ran out in the first half, having moved the ball from their own 28 to SF’s 20 yard line. In this drive, a 35-yard run by Myles was negated by a holding call.
Kramer hooked up with Vermillion for a 16-yard completion, and a 20-yard completion to Schultz took the Tigers to the Rebel 20-yard line when the gun sounded ending the first half.
The Tigers received the second half kickoff and drove down to the Rebel’s 25 yard line where they gave up the football on a fumble. Myles gained 32-yards on four carries on this drive.
On the next series the Tiger’s defense got the job done, with Paul Crowe making a 7-yard tackle for loss, which forced a SF punt that was returned seven yards down to Rebel 26 by McWilliams. On the first play from scrimmage Myles scooted the 26-yards for the touchdown that put BHS on top 28-0 at 0:19 of the third frame.
Beardstown recovered a South Fulton fumble on the next set of downs at the Rebel 19. The drive stalled and McWilliams booted a 32-yard field goal with 8:57 left in the contest boosting the locals to a 31-0 lead.
Coach Buhlig went to his bench and South Fulton promptly marched down the field on a series of pass completions, that resulted in a 42-yard touchdown pass from QB Alex Briney to Eli Wherley. The two-point PAT failed and the score stood at 31-6 at the 7:40 mark of the final frame.
The Tigers second string offense failed to move the ball, and a fourth down kick was blocked with SF taking over at the Tiger 34. On the first play from scrimmage Tyler Engel caught Briney’s second TD toss. The failed PAT ran the score to 31-12 with 6:00 left.
The Tigers stung by the two quick scores returned the starting lineup to the field and 7-plays after the onside kick failed Cole Huey banged into the end zone from 10-yards out taking two defenders with him. Huey had runs of 10, 6, and 10 in the touchdown drive.
The Tigers put the finishing touches on at 2:32 of the final get go when Myles intercepted a Briney pass and raced untouched into the end zone with fifth TD of the game to run the final score to 45-12.
