As the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks draws near, a special unveiling and ceremony is slated for the Project Tiger Pride (PTP) Beardstown High School Military Service Memorial Dedication. The PTP volunteers spent the first part of last week finishing the landscaping and lighting of the memorial site, and the program and presentation are in the final stages.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11. The program will begin in the high school gymnasium. Special seating will be provided for all surviving relatives of Beardstown students who sacrificed their lives for our country.     Handicapped seating will also be available. (Contact the BHS District Board office if you need assistance at 217-323-3099, ext. 6114.) Brian DeLoche and the Beardstown High School Elite Choir will provide music.
The dedication will move outside after the ceremony. The unveiling of the memorial and raising of the American Flag will follow. The flag was flown over the U.S. Capital in honor of all Beardstown High School students who lost their lives during any war. The flag is a gift from Congressman Aaron Schock. The benches around the Military Service Memorial are being donated by the Class of 2014.
Following the ceremony, there will be a reception hosted by the VFW Lady’s Auxillary in the high school cafeteria.
The Beardstown High School Military Service Memorial is the second large project PTP has undertaken. The initial landscaping and beautification project at the school and along the frontage of 15th Street has settled in and grown into a sense of pride for students and Beardstown residents. The non-profit group has also helped with landscaping and tilling of the elementary butterfly garden, downtown Beardstown beautification and more.
