By Susan Carson

Pull out those lawn chairs and cushions and get ready for the Virginia Labor Day Celebration on Monday, September 2, from 4-6 p.m. on the courthouse lawn. It will be a fabulous end of summer event with music by Burr Smith & The Joneses, bratwurst & hot dogs by the Virginia Masonic Lodge, ice cream and more. This event is sponsored by Volunteer Virginia.

The Cass County Food Pantry is on the move. August 26 will be the last date for food distribution in the location at Hotel Mann before they move to their new home in Doc Hollada's former office. The new location will provide much more needed space for the pantry, with safer access for the patrons from parking to pickup. Parking will be in the lot located south of the pantry and the entrance will be on Main Street through the white door. Recipients will be able to wait inside the building and exit through the back door adjacent to the parking lot.
The move is scheduled for Wednesday, August 28, beginning at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in volunteering an hour or more to help can contact Joanne Anderson at 473-5638.
There will be a Trivia Night at the Virginia United Methodist Church on August 31 to benefit the VHS student trip to Washington, D.C. in June 2014. Food will be available at 5 p.m. with the trivia contest starting at 6 p.m. Cost is $10 per person or $100 per team.  Contact Steve Clark at 248-6813 or Jeff Bennett at 370-1859 for more information or to register your team.
You may still drop off your new or used shoes at City Hall to be utilized by the Shoeman project. The shoes are refurbished, if necessary, then sold to exporters and the money is used to purchase well drilling rigs, water purification systems and other supplies needed to bring clean, fresh water to those in need.
The Virginia's Square One, Inc. Charity Auction has been scheduled for Saturday, October 12, and donations are currently being collected. If you have items to donate, contact Petefish Skiles & Co. Bank at 452-3041 to arrange pick up. Proceeds from the auction will be used to renovate the old Dime Store building into a Virginia Community Center.
