Jackie Robinson West proved it was no fluke when they defeated Bradley Bourbonnais 11-3 in the first of two championship contests. JRW then banged out a 14-3 four inning win over Bourbonnais to claim the 11-12 year old state title. JRW came out of the loser’s bracket to claim the state championship.
JRW’s Kendal Pettis settled the outcome early when he ripped a vicious line drive that cleared the fence for a grand slam home run in the top of the first inning giving the Chi-Town nine a quick 7-0 jump start win.
The south side crew added five more runs to lead 12-0 before Bourbonnais avoided a white-wash by scoring three in the bottom of the third. JRW then pushed across two more runs in the fourth for a 14-3 final.
JRW unlimbered their big bats throughout the tournament averaging just over 11 runs per game, and leaving the yard 13 times, with Marcus Wright leading the barrage with four ‘dingers.’
“We wanted to jump on them early,” said manager Darold Butler. “Kendal did just that with his grand slam, and Myles Norman added to it with his two-run double.”
Leading 9-0 heading into the top of the third, Marcus Garrett, Jr. ripped a two-run home run and J. Lemons added a solo blast to give JRW a 12-0 margin.
Bourbonnais got on the scoreboard trailing 12-0 in the bottom of the third with three-runs on RBI’s by J. Jasmin, S. O’Conner’s double, and P. Gerberding’s single.
JRW out-hit Bradley Bourbonnais 10-5, led by Pettis who went 3-for-4 with a double, the grand slam and four ribbies. M. Garrett also had a two-run shot, and was 2-for-3 with three RBI’s.
Wright picked up the win, allowing three runs, one of which was earned, walked four and struck out three. T. Kuntz took the loss, gave up nine runs on four hits, walked three and hit a batter and struck out three.
