Funds needed to save old dime store PDF Print E-mail

By Susan Carson

Virginia’s Square One, Inc. needs your help. The interior of the old dime store is falling in and that wouldn’t be a problem except that it is taking the upper row of windows down along with the roof! Bracing of the facade needs to occur immediately and the rafters need to be cut away so the front of the building stays intact. Funds are needed to pay for the bracing and labor required to save this historic facade.

Donations can be made at Petefish, Skiles & Company Bank, P.O. Box 18, Virginia, Illinois 62691. These donations will also count toward the $100,000 match.
A BBQ rib dinner fundraiser for the Virginia community center will occur on Saturday, August 10 from 4-9 p.m. at Dr. Ugs Drugstore Cafe. Dine in or carry out and there will be music by Stuart Smith and Friends from 6-9 p.m. Enjoy a dinner of Rhiannon’s oven baked ribs, Jessica’s cheesy potatoes, cole slaw & dessert for $14.95. Call 452-3442 if you would like a specific dining time. There will be a 50/50 raffle and all proceeds from the dinner and raffle will go toward the goal of $100,000 needed to receive the $100,000 matching donation. Come out for an evening of good food and music and support Virginia’s Square One, Inc.’s efforts to build a much needed community center.
The Virginia Farmer’s Market is each Sunday on the south side of the square from 11-2 p.m. Fresh produce, baked goods and more.
