‘Children’ enjoy donut making PDF Print E-mail

There is a Krispy Kreme Donut shop not too far from where we live and it is a favorite place for me to stop. I can spend a lot of time standing on the step looking through the large wall to wall window, with the other “small children,” watching the entire process of a machine making those popular donuts. The elevator moves the dough up and down letting the dough rise, then watching the doughnuts drop into the hot grease, flip over to cook the other side, then go under the automatic glazing machine. By the time they reach the end of the circle there are employees who put them in racks ready to be shipped throughout Central Illinois. Those donuts just off of the assembly line are warm, and just melt in your mouth.


When I was near there the other day I met Jon Fritzen, he was standing outside of his English two Decker bus. I walked over to talk to him and found out that Jon and his partner, Steffen Block, are two Blokes who brought the bus, made in their home town of Bristol, England, to Bloomington. They have made the lower floor of the bus into a modern kitchen and the closed-in upper deck into an air conditioned dining room with booths and tables.
They drive their bus into various parking lots of other businesses in the city and serve lunch specials including pork tacos and steak kabobs. It is definitely an English menu. Customers have the option of taking meals to-go, or sitting on the second level of the bus for their meal. They have been so successful that they have ordered a second bus. Jon says that it is not a hotdog—hamburger—French fry place, but they have a nice varied menu. He said it is quite a family attraction and families who stop for lunch often are back again to try something different.   Jon said, the kids really like their kabobs. The first bus is called George and when the second bus, which is called Victoria, is out of the garage and is renovated by the Bloomington High School students, they will have their routes of stopping at different parking lots each day of the week. Sure, we too would like to try the novelty of eating in the upper deck, but we can’t walk up the steps.

Word from those who attended the Little League breakfast last Saturday, report that it was a great success and that former Major Leaguer, Pat Perry, gave a talk the kids will long remember. It was also nice to hear of the many comments from the out-of-town teams about how nice the Bill Cowen Little League ball park was. Yes, it’s one of the best in the state.

It is estimated that 6,000 hotel rooms will be necessary to house the parents, relatives and players who will be in Normal this week for play in the National ASA girls Class A 14-under fast pitch softball tournament. This year 120 teams are expected; Normal puts on a good tournament, it is the eighth time in the past fifteen years that they have hosted it.
