Investigation ongoing in Ashland shooting (originally published 12-04-08)
The death of a Chandlerville man continues to be under investigation, while authorities question witnesses and gather information.
Steven P. Watkins died at an Ashland residence on the evening of Nov. 25. The autopsy report concluded he died of a single, non-self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Cass County Coroner Wyatt Sager is awaiting toxicology and other test results and has no final report at this time.

Steven Paul Watkins, 32, of Chandlerville died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 in Ashland. He was born Feb. 7, 1976 in Beardstown, to Dale and Penny (Phillips) Watkins.
Steven is survived by his parents, Dale and Penny Watkins of Chandlerville, two daughters: Alex Watkins of Chandlerville and Sidney Watkins of Ashland, and one sister, Ashley Watkins of Chandlerville. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Steven was a 1994 graduate of A.C. Central High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He worked for the State of Illinois Department of Child and Family Services. He loved to take care of his girls and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 30 at the Lintner-Hurley Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with Tommy Carlock officiating. Burial was in the Chandlerville Cemetery.
